ABOUT ME

The name is Roger. Roger Serna, from the ‘playground’ of the famous whalesharks, Oslob, Cebu, Philippines. Two English teachers (one in high school, the other in college) ‘saw’ the ‘promise’ in writing in me. My godfather, however, discouraged me, saying: ‘…there’s no money in writing.’

So, I took up commerce instead. After working in the accounting department of SunStar Cebu for two years, the itch to write became unbearable to I approached our editor-in-chief, Atty. Pachico A. Seares, who gladly a ccommodated me as an entertainment columnist on the side.

Six years after, I decided I was through with numbers & figures and focused on letters, words, paragraphs & the like. I grabbed the offer to edit the Leisure Page of the short-lived Newstime Daily and after almost two years, hopped to the Cebu Provincial Capitol where I served as Information Officer (later on changed to Administrative Officer V) until the offer for an early retirement dropped on my lap 24 years after at the age of 58.

Presently, I still write an entertainment column ind the Visayan language (Kyaw-Kyaw) Super Balita after my original Sounds & Images saw its demise in the middle of 2019 due to streamlining.

Missing my English column could be one of the driving forces in coming up with this blog.

This blog is a spin-off from my weekly column in the Cebu (Philippines) daily tabloid SunStar Superbalita entitled Kyaw-Kyaw which is a slang for a blabbermouth’s act. As in the original column, this blog will primarily deal with happenings in the entertainment arena in Cebu and the Philippines as well as those in other parts of the world that may tickle the interest of readers who want light materials or those that pave the way for escape from the harsh realities of life.

Topics and issues in the fields of tourism, arts and culture will also be tackled upon from time to time, as the need arises.

However, the blog may deviate from its original format and take more serious topics depending on the situation. There are times that celebrities in show business take a break from their usual routine and go for activities that appeal to their love for humanity, environment and the like.

These commendable acts need to be disseminated for their followers to emulate and for the general public to know that these show biz personalities can also be relied upon for sensible, noteworthy endeavors.

As mentioned earlier this does not mean, however, that situations and events that do not involve celebrities will go unnoticed. Of course, photos and perhaps sketches, that make the blog more lively and colorful will also be included.

Since my first column in the English language called Sounds & Images written in the English language and is carried in Superbalita’s ‘mother’ publication, SunStar Cebu, saw its demise in the second half of 2019 due to streamlining and other reasons, I will also try to carry the old columns here, an archive of sorts.

I hope you, dear readers, will find the blog enjoyable and worth your time and effort.
